a. Do you have any international friends or a host family? If so, how would you express your condolences to them if a family member died? If not, then how would you express consolences to an American host family if their Grandmother died?
I have some international friends or a host family. But I have never thought their family member died. If their family member died, I can't speak a word to them. Because they shocked and I hocked, too.
b. Have you ever been to a foreign funeral?
No, I haven't.

I agree with your opinion that you can't say anything to them when one of them die. But I think we have to express our mind through something. If so, how will you do that?
I have never been to foreigen funeral. So I don't have good ideas what I said when my interenational freind's familiy membere died, too.
By saying nothing might give an impression of not caring for the dead person. Think about it..
I have never been to foreigen funel. And I agree with your opinion. It is very difficult problem. Parhaps I wrote a letter to host family.
